Truth vs. Stories (Sermon)

Here is a sermon I preached not too long ago about some common misconceptions about two stories in the Bible.

truthvstoriesPIN copy

The first is the story of Noah, and a little known fact in the story that a lot of people miss. The second is the story of The Thief on the Cross, a story that is far too often taken out of context. Please watch the sermon and I encourage feedback as long as it’s kept in context and backed up with scripture accurately. If you haven’t read my post on Reading Scripture In Context, I would invite you to do that first. This is not a video. This is just a slideshow with the audio. Without giving any more away, here’s the sermon + slideshow. Enjoy!

Purchasing used homeschool curriculum

It’s getting that time of the year again when most everyone  is gearing up for school. For us homeschoolers, purchasing curriculum is a huge expense especially if you have more than one child. You can save quite a bit by buying used. I saved 87% on my last purchase! SCORE! Not all purchases will have this much savings but trust me, the savings are worth spending some time searching these sites. Save Used Curriculum Pin

Here is a complied list of the places I use to find used curriculum and save! You can also sell your used curriculum on these sites as well. This will help offset some of the cost and not clutter your home.

  1. Ebay I know this one is probably obvious. But keep this site in mind. One thing to watch out on Ebay is the shipping cost. And also just because it is on ebay does not mean it is the cheapest. I have seen MANY times that a used product is higher than purchasing directly from the company.
  2. Amazon –Another obvious place to buy used. Amazon is one my favorite places to order. I have bought many things from Amazon. Many times, they have the best deal, and if you have Amazon  Prime, most of the time you get FREE 2 day shipping. Again check prices. I have seen used items on Amazon that are cheaper but that do not qualify for Amazon Prime 2 day shipping therfore come out to as much or more than a new item with Free 2 day shipping. So check total price including shipping to make sure you are getting the best deal.
  3. Varage Sale That’s not a typo, Varage Sale is like an online garage sale. They have community boards that you can join. Ask to join {BEST} Homeschool Swap USA/Canada. After you are added, it will have a newsfeed just like Facebook. You can browse or use the search bar at the top of the page to find a specific homeschool curriculum. You can also post ISO (In search of) posts as well.
  4. VegSource– I use this web site by looking under the Items for Sale. You should see links by grade level. Click on the grade level and the use the Ctrl + F shortcut. This works in Google Chrome and should work with other browsers. A little bar will drop from the top of your browser. In the white space/search type in name of curriculum. As you’re typing it will start bringing up your search by highlighting the items that it finds. You can use the down arrow to move through the search results. If it displays 0 of 0, then it didn’t find any matches.
  5. Homeschool Classfieds I’m not fond of their layout or user friendliness of the site. However, they have a ton of curriculum for sale so I overlook the poor quality of the web site design/layout. The easiest way to find a particular product is to use the search.
  6. Used Homeschool Books They don’t have the biggest selection but they are worth checking out if you are planning to purchase some of the top/well known curriculums i.e. Abeka.
  7. Facebook Pages  There are a few Facebook pages that have places to buy/sell/trade homeschool curriculum. Most of these are closed groups so you will have to type the name of the Facebook page into the Facebook search (top of page), click on page, and then ask to become a member to the group. After they have approved you, you can browse the feed. The best way I have found to find certain curriculum is to hit Ctrl + F shortcut. (see above under VegSource details) When using the Ctrl +F shortcut in Facebook Group Feeds, it will only find the items that show up in your newsfeed so scroll down farther and then search again. Here are the names of the FB pages that I have found;

Our local co-op has a used curriculum sale page. Also be sure to ask you local co-op if they have a resale group page. And then you can go pick it up and not have to pay for shipping.

8.  Check your local co-op- My local co-op has a meeting at the beginning of every school year. They all get together and have a currciulum marketplace. You can sell your items, buy items from other members, and they even have a FREE room selection. Last year, I found Abeka lesson plans, test keys, and Seatwork Text in the Free room!

Leave your comments

There you have it. My list of web sites to find used curriculum. There are a ton of web sites out there but some of them have very minimal listing or I just can’t seem to find what I’m looking for. What are some of your favorite web sites to buy used curriculum? Where have you scored deals?

How to make Magnesium Oil

Most people these days are deficient in magnesium. It is estimated that approximately 80% of Americans are deficient in magnesium. Magnesium is so vital that every major organ in the human body needs it to function properly. The significance of magnesium is so grand that I will save all the details for a later post. But let me just say, magnesium is very important and when one is deficient in magnesium, there are side effects that one will experience.

Magnesium Oil

After I read tons of information about magnesium, I learned magnesium is best absorbed through the skin. This method is called trans dermal magnesium therapy.  I began looking at Amazon for magnesium oil but it is expensive! The Ancient Minerals brand (higher quality) is $36.69 for an 8 oz bottle! This is too expensive for my blood so I researched how to make the magnesium oil yourself.

It is super easy to make and a LOT cheaper!

What is Magnesium good for?

I will try to keep this short, but here is a few things that magnesium does for the body.

  • Relieves stress
  • Aids weight loss
  • Promotes a more restful sleep
  • Eases PMS and menstrual cramps
  • Prevents Kidney stones and can possibly reverse kidney stones
  • Aids in Vitamin D absorption (most Americans are also deficient in Vitamin D as well)
  • Helps relieve constipation
  • Helps the body adsorb nutrients
  • Lowers blood pressure
  • Boosts energy levels
  • Promotes bone and dental health
  • Helps strengthen the immune system
  • Can help with disorders like fibromyalgia, diabetes, IBS, ADD, ADHD, insomnia, depression, restless leg syndrome, and more
  • Promotes skin health
  • Helps promote overall health and wellness

I plan on writing a more in depth post about the benefits of magnesium so stay tuned for the article! If you want to do some research, here is a book that talks about the benefits of Magnesium.

What you need

  • 1/2 c Magnesium Chloride Flakes
  • 1/2 c distilled water
  • spray bottle (one batch will make about 4 oz of magnesium oil. I keep mine in (2) 2 oz spray bottles)

IMG_1902IMG_1905IMG_1904

Cost Breakdown

The Ancient Chloride Flakes (I recommend this brand because of quality) will cost you about $11.05 on Amazon and if you are a Prime member, the shipping is FREE. The bag will make quite a few batches and the batches last for quite some time. The Distilled water costs me $0.99. And I picked up the spray bottles for a $1 each. One 1.65 lb bag of the flakes will make 6.61  batches. So you do the math and that is $1.67 for 1/2 c flakes and $0.03 for the distilled water totaling $1.70. That sure beats $36.69 for the 8 oz bottle!! You could add in the $1 bottles if you want, but the spray bottles are a one time cost.

How to make

  1. Bring water to boil. Remove from heat.
  2. Stir in Magnesium Flakes until dissolved. Allow to cool.
  3. Store in spray bottle.

IMG_1911

How to use

Shake the bottle before spraying. Spray 10-20 spritz on arms, legs, stomach once daily. You will probably have a tingling, itching, sensation. This usually goes away after 20 or 30 minutes. To me, it feels like those tingle lotions that you use for the tanning beds. This is normal and after consistent use, this should go away. I have read that the tingling, itching, actually means you are deficient in magnesium. I want to say this is probably correct. When I first began using the magnesium oil, I had a very strong tingly itchy sensation. I kept using it and it didn’t go away. I actually stopped using it for a while. Then I began using Himalayan salt (read my article about Himalayan Salt) into my diet. I used it again and the tingly, itchy feeling was very low and it subsided after about 1-5 minutes. You will probably want to start out with about 10 spritz and work your way up to 20 spritzes.

Let me know what you think and how it works for you!

10 Ways to Respect Your Husband

In today’s society, we often have loud voices about how the woman deserves respect. We have a tendency to voice our opinion on how the woman WILL be respected. But sometimes we forget the men. The heads of the household are often disrespected. We are so focused on respect for the women, we over run and overpower the men.

RespectHusband

A few days ago, my hubby and I were studying the bible. And the scripture got me to start thinking. I know, this is what it should do :-p but sometimes verses make you dig deeper than other times. The next day, Matt Walsh posted a blog post called “Your Husband doesn’t Have to Earn Your Respect.” We all know what respect means but do we all really know how to give it? I began pondering “What ways can a Wife show her respect for her husband?”

“Nevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife see that she reverence her husband.” (Ephesians 5:33)

I think one of the best examples we can look at is Christ and his Church. How would Christ’s Church show respect to Christ? I asked my hubby to brainstorm with me. I wanted his input on how a wife could respect their husband. And here is the list we came up with.

List of Ways to Respect Your Husband

1.)Encourage them with Love. When he stumbles, be there for him and encourage him to get back on his feet. We all have our weaknesses and the devil is constantly looking to put stumbling blocks in our way. We should be there to offer a helping hand to help him back on his feet.

Wherefore comfort yourselves together, and edify one another, even as also ye do. (1 Thessalonians 5:11)

2.)Give input without a condescending attitude– No one likes it when someone talks to them with a condescending attitude. It shows the utmost disrespect to the person that is being spoken to. Most people, do not take this kind of criticism lightly and usually directly offends the person. If we respect our husband, we will speak to him with kindness. If you are helping your husband out with a project, giving him your honest opinion is valuable. But it must be done with respect and in a loving manner. Your input is worth something but if you try to put him down, respond with negativity in your voice, or even act like he is stupid, he probably won’t take lightly to your words.

My husband knows me very well and sometimes I think he knows me better than I know myself. He knows when I have had a rough day without me telling him. On rough days, my husband will offer to cook supper for me. Before I share the story, let me put out there, my husband is a pretty good cook. I glad fully accept his cooking offers. When I jot down recipes, there is often things I don’t write down because I know how, and what to do while cooking the recipe. I also have a habit of not following the recipe to a T but changing it where I see fit. Well, these changes I don’t write down and I often think some of this is a given without having to jot it down. I guess in a sense, I take cliff notes for my recipes. I didn’t realize I did this until he was following a recipe and he skipped a step (I didn’t have it written on the index card). This has happened on more than one occasion. When he told me it didn’t look right, I began asking did he do this, this, and this. He missed one step. The step that was missing from my written recipe. At first, I replied with “Why didn’t you follow the recipe?” And that is when he told me, “It didn’t say to do that.” I had to investigate the recipe and realized, he was right. Then I was baffled on how he didn’t know to this certain step that in my head, everyone knows to do this. I helped him fix the recipe but I was condescending. I acted as if, he SHOULD have known what to do. My attitude should have been, “sorry dear. I didn’t write it down on the recipe but that’s ok, it can be fixed.”

The bible tells us to humble our self. We should serve one another including our husband with meekness, humility, and gentleness.

I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, (Ephesians 4:1-2)

3.) Disagreeing with kind words- Throughout the years of marriage, there will be many disagreements. You will not always see eye to eye on every single subject and that is ok. But if you do disagree, your response should be with kind words. Some of us can get very heated when someone doesn’t agree with us. Calling them an idiot, stupid, or whatever offensive name you can think of doesn’t do any good. And it definitely doesn’t show your husband respect. Respecting his opinion doesn’t mean you have to change your opinion to match his opinion. It simply means to hear his side of the argument and when you still don’t agree, explain your side calmly and kindly. If you both can not see eye to eye on the issue, simply agree to disagree and respect his opinion.

Have nothing to do with foolish, ignorant controversies; you know that they breed quarrels. And the Lord’s servant  must not be quarrelsome but kind to everyone, able to teach, patiently enduring evil, correcting his opponents with gentleness. God may perhaps grant them repentance leading to a knowledge of the truth, (1 Timothy 2:23-25)

4.) Be the help meet- As the wife, we are called to be the help meet. God said it is not good for the man to be alone. We are called to help our husbands out. If he is working on a project, help him out. Help him get the tools. While he is at work, clean the home, cook the food, do the laundry. Take care of the household duties.

And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him. (Genesis 2:18)

5.) Submissive vs. Dominating

Often, we see two different kinds of women in the home. You have the submissive women and then you have the dominating women. The women is either submissive to her husband and other times, you have the woman who acts like the head of the household.

The Bible tells women to be submissive to their husband. Just like Christ is the head of the Church so is the husband over the household. Women are should submit to their husbands EVEN if the husband is an unbeliever. In 1 Peter 3, it states the wife should submit so that the husband might be won over by seeing her pure, honorable conduct, and deep respect. The believing wife could possibly win over the unbelieving husband by letting her light shine.

Wives, in the same way submit yourselves to your own husbands so that, if any of them do not believe the word, they may be won over without words by the behavior of their wives,  when they see the purity and reverence of your lives. (1 Peter 3:1-2)

Most Christian woman understand how they should not act like the head of the household. Most men also tend to use this verse to “put their woman in their place” so to speak. Scripture clearly shows how the woman should not be dominating in her home and be subject to her husband. But there is such a thing as being too submissive.

Many Christians today have became so passive with their faith, we don’t stand for anything. I think the same concept can be applied to the wives. Yes, we should submit to our husbands but if you husband tells you to do something that is against the Bible, then you should obey God. The heroes of the Bible stood firm in what they believed in. They didn’t back down to kings, rulers, or anyone who had dominion over them when it came to disobeying God. Women shouldn’t be submissive if it violates God’s commands.

To explain myself, here is an example. Most men today have easy access to pornography. Men tend to struggle with lust more than women. There are also many stumbling blocks placed in their path. A woman in short shorts walking through the grocery store. The half naked woman displayed on most magazines placed at the checkout stand. Advertisements blasting through the television on a family network with women prancing around in lingerie.  All these things are thrown at men these days but it doesn’t give them an excuse to take part in this. When men do this, not only are they disobeying God, but also corrupting their marriage. Jesus said that whosoever looked at a woman with lust had already committed adultery in his heart. (Matthew 5:28) Most women today make excuses for their husbands saying, “I don’t care where he gets his appetite as long as he comes home for supper.” Or, “It’s only natural for men to take part in this.” Or, “It’s no big deal” but deep down it hurts their marriage and hurts the wife. This attitude is wrong.

Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter! (Isaiah 5:20)

By saying it is ok for men to lust after women, we are calling evil good and good evil. In this case, the women should stand firm and hold to her faith. If she simply doesn’t say anything, she is condoning the wrongful actions. She should tell her husband, “Hey lusting after women is wrong, God calls it a sin, and it hurts me.” This is not being dominant. This is speaking up and standing up for what is right. If a woman was being beaten by her husband, should she simply be submissive?

All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works. (2 Timothy 3:16-17)

Somewhere between these two extremes, we need to find a happy medium. We should be submissive to our husbands but not willing to waver on right from wrong.

6.) Praise Him for his Accomplishments– Men LOVE to hear praises when they have done a good job. I don’t think this stretches just to the men, but to everyone. When we accomplish something, we like to hear good things and a husband wants to hear the praises from his wife. He needs to hear it. He needs to know his wife loves, supports, and sees his worth.

7.)Support Him during good times and the bad- We say our wedding vows stating that we will stick with them though sickness and in health, in the good and bad times. We are making a vow to God that we will stick it out with that one special person until death. Supporting that special someone is often easy when things are going well. Sometimes, supporting them during the bad times can be tough.  But through the trials of your relationship a better understanding of each other can be accomplished and a marriage can grow stronger from it. Use the bad times to learn and grow to make more good times.

8.)Let him have his projects- About a year or 2 ago, my husband had this idea that he could build a shed out of pallets (thank you pinterest lol). He could get the pallets for free from his work. We talked it over and we agreed he would start on his project. He used Google Sketchup to make a blueprint. He got a buddy to help him haul them home. The whole time, he had an ear to ear grin. Let me tell you, I wasn’t fond of this idea but the pallets were free and our current shed wasn’t in great condition. He brought home 100+ pallets and placed them in our back yard. Fast forward to now, 2 years later, and those 100+ pallets are still sitting in our back yard. We are currently giving them away to anyone that wants some as well as using them for small projects. Needless to say, the shed isn’t being built. In my husband’s defense, we were placed in a high risk flood zone. We had to have a surveyor come out so we didn’t have to pay for insurance we couldn’t afford and didn’t think we needed. 95% of the time we are in a drought. And they wanted to keep us in a flood zone because of our rusty, leaky shed that has no door on it. Anyways, after is was all said and done, we got the flood insurance taken off and now we basically can’t build any structure in our back yard unless we want to add flood insurance to it. It’s ridiculous but that’s how everything fell.

My husband said he felt respected because I didn’t prevent him from trying to start his project. He said I respected him enough to attempt to build a shed. When we were discussing this blog post, he brought this example up to me. At first, I didn’t see how this showed him respect but to him, it meant a whole lot to him that I had approved his idea.  Now he has brought materials home to build an aquaponics system.

If his projects or interests don’t interfere with the budget, family time, or is causing him to stumble, then let him have his projects.

9.) Make time for him

Things can get hectic when having kids, friends, family, church, etc. When you respect someone you will make time for that person. We should show our husbands enough respect to put down the phone when he gets home from work. Take a break from the household chores to spend some time with him. Close out the computer, tablet, cell phone, book, or whatever distraction that is in your way and give him your undivided attention. Simply giving him eye contact can shows respect. He needs your undivided attention.

10.) Speak only kindly about your husband

Most women like to talk. And sometimes our mouths can get us in trouble. When speaking about our husband, we should speak about his good points and speak only positively about him. If we do have an issue with our spouse, we should talk to them in private without “other ears” listening. I feel when a husband and a wife have a disagreement, it should be handled behind closed doors. The children do not need to hear the quarreling. We have to remember, our children are like sponges. They soak up everything including the bad. If we are disrespectful to our husband or even speak negatively about him to a friend or family member, they might think this attitude is ok.

Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers. (Ephesians 4:29)

What did we miss? What are some things you do to respect your husband? Husbands, how do you feel respected by your wives?

Homemade Ranch

Homemade Ranch is sooo yummy! If you have never made homemade ranch, give this recipe a try. Once you have had the homemade ranch, you don’t want to go back to store bought ranch!

homemade ranch

I still buy the store bought kind to have on hand but I try to always have some homemade Ranch made. I have to have a big thank you to The Happy Money Saver! She shared her DIY Copycat Hidden Valley Ranch. Credit goes to The Happy Money Saver for the original. For the most part, I have stuck to the original recipe but I have changed it slightly so here goes.

Dry Mix

First you need to make the dry mix.

IMG_1755

  • 1/2 cup dry buttermilk
  • 2 T parsley
  • 1 t dill weed
  • 1 t onion powder
  • 1 t onion flakes
  • 1 t salt
  • 1 garlic powder
  • 1 t garlic salt
  • 1/4 t pepper

Mix all the ingredients and store in jar. I place mine in the fridge since it contains the dry buttermilk. I originally store it in my spice cabinet until a light bulb went off in my head. I was storing the dry buttermilk in the fridge (due to directions on packaging) but not the dry mix.  Oops! None of  us got sick but just to be on the safe side, we store it in the fridge now!

Ranch RecipeIMG_1753

3 T dry mix

1 C Real Mayo

2/3 – 1 C buttermilk

Using a whisk, mix the dry mix and buttermilk first. I found it seems to mix better without clumping this way. After you have it mixed thoroughly, add the mayo. Store in container in fridge.

We usually go ahead and use the ranch right away but it does taste better if you let it sit in the fridge for an hour or so before using.

Again a special thanks goes to The Happy Money Saver! I have tried many different recipes for the DIY ranch and this one tops them all! We rarely use a store bought ranch anymore. And if we do, it is simply because we are about to eat and I am out of the ingredients.

We’re all searching

We’re all searching…. searching desperately for the reason to life, the meaning, true happiness, love, or the answer to our problems.

searching

Science tries to make sense of things through investigation of things seen, theologies, and studying life itself. Economical problems look to the government to solve the current economical pitfalls we face as a culture. An alcoholic drowns their sorrows in another beer. An addict feels the next fix is the solution to the problem. A broken heart searches for another to heal their ache. The unhappy seeks to find happiness. The poor seeks to not feel the burdens of poverty and looks to the rich man’s grass and wonders what it feels like to walk in his shoes only to find the rich man is still searching for something. The sick looks for the cure. No matter who we are, we have all been lost at sometime and searched out answers to our problems.

As I look around, I see a broken society. I see people getting divorced left and right and a shattered home is what is left. The parents are so banged up from the emotional and financial stress, they are simply broken. The children have felt the enormous weight and have no idea how to fix the problem. They are caught in the whirlwind of the war and have nowhere to turn. The parents, after some healing, seek out a new partner to heal their sorrow. Sometimes, the marriage withstands but other times, it is only ended in another broken home.

Children seek to their friends, parents, tv, society for the answers. Many children are not guided these days and the world teaches them its ways. They teach them how to be of this world but the world is broken.

Debt in America is SO huge, we think well if we can somehow climb out of this enormous debt we have created, things will be good again. As time passes, we just keep passing our debt on to the next generation and creating a bigger mess. Maybe the next president can help us. Maybe he has some answers.  Or maybe this other guy knows what he is talking about. Maybe he has the answers.

Science thinks they have it all figured out until, they don’t. They are looked to have all the big answers when all they have is evidence of things they can study right here and now. They can’t explain how the world really began and most don’t want to look to a Intelligent Designer to try to explain the unexplained. They can study, and study, and study, and when they die, there will still be problems they can’t explain. The Big Bang, Darwin’s Theory of Evolution and other theories that are being taught as truth to young children  have caused many to stumble in their faith. Don’t get me wrong, science has did many great things but the theories are only theories. A theory is an idea in which the person suspects. A thesis, hypothesis, and a theory all have to proven before it makes it true. So why is it Darwin’s theory of Evolution is said to be fact? Evolution does occur but it has it’s limit. The definition of theory is a supposition or a system of ideas intended to explain something, especially one based on general principles independent of the thing to be explained. “Darwin’s theory of evolution” No, I did not add the last part. That was the example given (see the picture below). define theory

Darwin studies the different beaks of the finch. And we can clearly see how things can adapt. But never has anyone seen any sign that we evolved from a monkey. A human has always been  a human. A monkey has always been a monkey. Science is putting their faith in science, man’s theologies, and denying God when they teach/believe these types of theologies that contradict God’s word. In the 2 Timothy, we read;

O Timothy, keep that which is committed to thy trust, avoiding profane and vain babblings, and oppositions of science falsely so called: Which some professing have erred concerning the faith. Grace be with thee. Amen. (2 Timothy 6:20-21)

The poor see the rich man driving these nice vehicles, living in these nice homes, and thinks “If I could make a little more money, my problems would be solved.” The rich man is looking to the richer man and thinking the same thing.

One who always seeks money will never be satisfied. If your heart craves the riches of this world, you will spend your whole life chasing after more money. There is many verses in the bible about the love of money and here is a few.

“For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.” (1 Timothy 6:10)

He that loveth silver shall not be satisfied with silver; nor he that loveth abundance with increase: this is also vanity.” (Ecclesiastes 5:10)

“Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” (Matthew 6:19-21)

Some people look to religion, denominations, to find the key to this life. Maybe this religion over here is on to something. Maybe that denomination over there is better than the last one I was apart of. Some turn bitter before they truly find the true hope they were looking for.

The bible warns us that there will be many false teachers, false religions, and false doctrines. If we do not study for ourself we can not know which religions are false. Being a Christian is more than just going to church every Sunday. The Bible instructs us to take up our cross daily. The only way to know the Lord, we must dust off that Bible and study it for ourself.

“Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints; ” (Ephesians 6:10-18)

“Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them.” (Romans 16:17)

“For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works.” ( 2 Corinthians 11:13-15)

“For God is not [the author] of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints.” (1 Corinthians 14:33)

Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.

Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.” (Matthew 7:15-23)

Throughout all the history of mankind, we have searched for these big answers to the answers to life. As a Christian, I see the brokenness of the world and want to tell them the answer. I want to tell them about the enlightenment of my hope, my faith, the love of Jesus Christ, and our heavenly father. I want to shout out to everyone but no one wants to hear it. I was once deaf but now I hear.

I can see divorce is not the answer. Science is not the answer. More money is not the answer. Man-made religions, violence, cruelty, drugs, alcohol, stealing, lying, cheating, government, gossiping, food, new shiny thingies, fighting, and whatever else we use try to fix the problems.   I see all these things that we have tried to fit into the blank and have not worked but yet generation after generation, we think well maybe, it’ll work this time. I want to show them the answer but no one wants to see….. I was once blind but now I see.

I truly believe we are born with the desire to seek out the Father. We have it instilled in us but on our journey, the devil pulls us down all the confusing paths and we get lost. He holds up a sign that says “Here are the real answers. ____ is the answer. Follow me.” Some will find it for a short period of time only to pulled right back into the ways of this world. And many will wonder around this earth and never find it. Very few will find what really fills their soul. Through all the ups and downs of this life, they have that solid ground to withstand all the ammo the devil has to fire.

As a Christian, it is disheartening that no one wants to hear about this awesome thing you have found. When you buy this new thingy that is the coolest thing since sliced bread, people want to know about it. They rush out and buy it. Not giving it a second thought. But when you have found the best treasure your have EVER found, you’re just religious.

You have found this hope in the bleakest of times. You have this new sense of life. You have found the real reason, the real answer, and this amazing love. And through this amazing love, you have felt love deeper than you ever have. It has changed you for the better. You want to do good things. And while others see the great news as only a set of rules to follow that only chains one down, you feel free. Your chains have been broke from the bondage of sin.  And not only are you free, you have this sense of peace even in a raging storm. You have the best news ever! You want to share it with everyone but very few will have an ear to hear or eyes to see.

Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin. And the servant abideth not in the house for ever: but the Son abideth ever. If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed. (John 8:34-36)

You can see the destruction your own selfish desires can bring. You see why God says not to do certain things. He says it for your own self good. And just like any good father would do, he warns you of these ways.

The answer is the Lord. His ways are good. He is good. He is love. He is the way, the truth, and the light. He is the beginning and the end.  If we try to live by the moral ways of the Lord, our ways will be right. As a human, we often like to justify our ways to our own self desires. Our morals began to crumble if we all do this. What might be right in one’s eyes might be wrong in another. Suddenly things that were once wrong seem ok. Our society is broken because our foundation is no longer standing on a firm ground. Our nation was once a great nation that was built with Christ as the foundation. But slowly, Christ is being pulled out from our nation.

America’s  founding father’s set up on nation on the morals of God. In the beginning of the school systems, our own government printed the Bibles to be used in the classroom. Now, we can’t say a prayer before a football game. (I recommend watching Monumental. If you have Amazon prime, it is free. If not, you can buy Monumental for $10.69 or you can rent Monumental for $3.99) If you seek the Lord, live by his ways, society is better as whole. The bible tells us not to lie, cheat, steal, murder, gossip, be unjust, not to hate anyone but love one another, help one another, give to the needy, respect the elderly, and do good things. And then, we are to teach them to our own children. If we were all to follow this rule, this world would be a better place.  Each person would be a better person. Our nation could be great once again. You see, the answer is the Lord.

Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the Lord, and depart from evil. (Proverbs 3:5-7)

DIY girls skirt

DIY girls skirt

A few years ago, I made my oldest daughter a 4th of July pillowcase dress. The pillowcase dress now fits my youngest so I wanted to make my oldest a simple 4th of July skirt. I still had fabric left over from the pillowcase dress and I knew both my girls would love to match. Here is the tutorial I used as an outline on how to sew this super easy skirt. First you need to take your measurements.

Measure the waist

Measure your child’s waist. My child’s waist measured about 24.5 so I rounded up to 25. Take that number and multiply it by 1.5. If you want a fuller skirt, multiply it by 2.

Your measurements : (Child’s waist )X (1.5) = Width of material

My Measurements: (25) X (1.5)=37.5

Measure the Length

Measure the length you want the skirt to be. I measured from waist to knees.  Then add 2 inches.

Your Measurements: (Length of skirt) + 2 = Length of material

My Measurements: (12)+ (2)= 14

Elastic

The length of the elastic should be about 1/2 shorter that the measurement for the waist. When you overlap the elastic and sew it, the elastic will be about 1 in- 1.5 in. This will all depend on how much you overlap. You want the elastic to be smaller than their waist so it stay up. I originally cut the elastic 1 inch more than the waist measurement. I sewed the elastic together and before closing up the waist, I had my daughter try on the skirt. It was too loose. So I had to rip the seam, cut off some of the elastic, and sew back together.

Your Measurement: (Child’s Waist) – (0.5)= Length of Elastic

My Measurement: (25)-(0.5)=24.5 inches

Cut Fabric

Using the measurements, cut out your fabric of choice.

Iron waist and hem

Ironing Waist

From the top of the fabric where the waist will be, fold the fabric in 0.5 in. Make sure you are folding the fabric from the outside (the part of the fabric you want to show) to the inside of the skirt (part of the fabric that will not show). Now iron.

Now fold the fabric  over 1 in again. Make sure to keep the first fold inside the second as you iron. If you were to completely unfold both folds it should total to 1.5 inches.

Ironing Hem

The method for the hem is the same concept as ironing the waist. Fold the raw edge from the outside to inside. The first fold will measure 0.25 in. Iron.

Fold fabric over 0.25 in making sure to keep the first fold inside the 2nd fold. Iron. If you completely unfold both folds, it should total 0.5 in.IMG_1830

Begin sewing

Sew Inseam

Take your fabric and fold it in half  with the outside facing in. Match the two inseams up. This seam will run the length of the skirt (from waist to hem). Unfold where you ironed the waist and the hem before you sew. You can use pins to hold the fabric in place while you sew. Before you begin sewing, Sew about 0.5 inch into the fabric. I used the guidelines on my sewing machine to sew. *** At the beginning and end of each straight stitch, you will need to back stitch. This will keep the thread from coming undone.

Sew Hem

Take the fabric and fold the bottom (hem) to the inside of the skirt. This is where you previously ironed the hem. You should be able to clearly see the crease from where you ironed. The fabric will probably want to turn inside. Make sure you have both creases in. You do not want the raw edge to show. Now sew a straight stitch making sure to keep the raw fabric on the inside of the crease.

Sew Waist

Fold the fabric in using the creases as a guideline. Measure approximately 2 in (this doesn’t have to be exact) and mark them with pins. The pins will tell you when to start and stop sewing. You will need to leave a gap so you can feed your elastic into the waist. Make sure not to sew over the pins. I have been told you can sew over them but I have bent my pins doing this and my sewing machine didn’t seem to like it either.

Feed elastic and sew the elastic

Place large safety pins on each end of the elastic. The safety pins will help you feed the elastic into the waist. I just recently learned the tip to use one on each end. I was glad I tried it because as I was trying to adjust the elastic, the back end slipped in the fabric. Normally, I would have to re-feed the elastic back through.

Pull both ends of the  elastic out of the waist so you can get them under your pressure foot.  Remove the safety pins. Overlap the ends about 3/4 in and place under pressure foot. I used a zig zag stitch to hold the elastic. Sew forward and then backwards a couple of times. Now, pull on the waist so that the elastic disappears in the waist.

Now you can close up the gap. Sew the gap that you left open for the elastic.
